What Is Menopause

Menopause is a natural transitional period that occurs in a woman’s life between the age of 45 and 55. This can last for more than five years. The term ‘menopause’ is taken from the Greek word ‘pausis,’ which literally translates to cessation. This condition happens at the “end of monthly cycles” when the woman is at the end of her fertility. This means permanent end to monthly menstruation. The ovaries, at this stage, are reduced to producing very low levels of progesterone and estrogen. Decreased hormonal levels lead to menopause, and the signs and symptoms of menopause differ in all women.

Although most women experience menopause between 45 and 55 years of age, statistics also indicate younger women may also experience menopause due to genetic dysfunction or cancer treatments near the pelvic area. Currently, 37.5 million women are at menopause, according to the U.S. Census Data.

What Causes Menopause

Menopause occurs due to the drop and change in hormones produced by ovaries. There is a decline in the number of functioning eggs in the ovaries. During the time of reproduction, most women have 1-3 million eggs that are lost eventually by the time she reaches 45. Most of these eggs are lost by normal ovulation; some die off in a process called atresia, which is the degeneration of ovarian follicles.

The eggs, with the progression of age, become resistant to the reproductive hormone, which ultimately reduces the production of estrogen.
