Ashwagandha has been used for thousands of years in Ayurvedic medicine to treat various ailments, especially anxiety and insomnia. However, new studies are suggesting that this amazing root (scientific name Withania somnifera) may even do more for us when used regularly. Here are five other reasons why you should be supplementing with Ashwagandha daily.
Boosts Immunity.
Ashwagandha is an adaptogenic herb that helps boost immunity, improves sleep quality, and reduces anxiety. Try my favorite gummies loaded with adaptogens and healing herbs when I need a little support before speaking events, lives, or a little breather when stressful days hit. It does this by improving our body’s defense system, protecting us from certain diseases, and by improving cell-mediated immunity. It also possesses potent antioxidant properties that can help protect against cellular damage caused by free radicals. [1]
Promotes Healthy Weight Loss.
Chronic & psychological stress has been known to be a key factor in many illnesses, obesity being one of them. When we are stressed we have a tendency to eat more and exercise less. This magical root supports the body’s natural ability to regulate itself by balancing out the effects of stress. As a result of managing and balancing our stress response, ashwagandha can promote weight loss naturally without causing side effects. [2]
Helps with Menopause Symptoms.
One of the healing benefits of this amazing herb is its ability to help relieve menopausal symptoms, such as hot flashes, heart discomfort, and sleep issues. Studies have also shown that when using Ashwagandha for menopause treatment, there was a noticeable difference in mood, depression, and irritability. This herb helps by balancing our hormones while reducing anxiety and insomnia. [3] One of my favorite supplements for sleep and stress is support is Adaptogenic Gummies. I take one when I am having a hectic day or when I’m feeling too wired before bed. They absolutely work. (try them here)
Lowers Blood Pressure
One of the best ways to lower blood pressure is to manage chronic stress. Ashwagandha helps us to naturally increase our energy and resistance to stress, which can help us to lower blood pressure. As well, since Ashwagandha is a powerful antioxidant, it may also help reduce inflammation, and inflammation is associated with elevated blood pressure (BP) in the general population.
Increase Muscle and Strength
Studies showed, that athletes who supplemented with Ashwagandha were found to see a significant increase in muscle mass and strength (when used in conjunction with a strength training program.) This study suggests that there may be a benefit to supplementing Ashwagandha with your weight training program.
Ashwagandha (aka: Indian ginseng) is one of the oldest and most prized adaptogenic herbs in use today. Studies are showing that it may have farther-reaching benefits than once thought. Ashwagandha is considered safe for most people. However, it’s important to talk to your healthcare provider before using any herbal supplement.
