How My Back Pain Ordeal Started
If you have experienced sciatica, lower back pain, pins, and needles, a “knife stuck right on your back,” burning or severe sciatica, allow me to give you a huge virtual hug!
I have felt your pain. I have been there and would never want to be there again. Back pain can be as debilitating as any other condition or even worse because when there is a flare-up, you are at your backs mercy– actually your sciatic and other nerves mercy.
Back pain isn’t native to a particular age group. From athletes to office workers, to weight trainers anyone is vulnerable. All you need is to bend the wrong way, sit in the same-wrong position for hours– throughout the years or sustain a minor injury to develop bulging or herniated disks. Bulging disks, eventually put pressure on the sciatic nerve, accompanied by severe pain and numbing of one of both legs.
This is the story of how my ordeal with back pain started and how you or a loved one, can potentially prevent and even reverse injury.
A few years ago, while I was a freshman in college, I worked as an Administrative Assistant for a large organization in NYC. Some of my duties including filing documents — which I dispise by the way. That was profile filing cabinet Karma ha! Anyhow, one day while trying to file away some documents I pulled out a drawer full of files which weight probably 500 lbs when all of a sudden the whole drawer came out. of the hinges Yes, you read it right– with heavy files and all! For some reason, my instant reaction was to try to grab it, perhaps so the heavy drawer wouldn’t fall on my feet, or who knows. Note to self: If a drawer comes out flying out of the cabinet let it fly out the window if you must, but do not try to hold it. I instantly felt a shooting pain from my lower back all the way to the neck. I knew I something wasn’t right with my lower back, but I didn’t know the severity at the moment.
I went home extremely sore, then the next day when I went to get up from bed my mind said you are up and my back said– oh no you aren’t. Since I had to get to school and work I forced myself out of bed with mom’s help. I managed to get out of bed, take a shower and do everything painfully slow. She insisted not to go, but ya know– I was young I “knew and could handle it all”. Needless to say walking was extremely painful, but getting in and out of the car was misery. One task was more painful than the other, and of course: I wasn’t listening to my body.
That was the beginning of the most horrible pain I’d ever experienced. I eventually was diagnosed with L1 & S1 bulging discs. I dare going to say that it much worse than the back pain during pregnancy I experienced, and even giving birth to my son –because at list that ceased at some point. The pain on my lower back, and leg was so intense that I was no longer able to get solid sleep. This of course, started to take a toll on my mental and physical health. OTC medications didn’t do much, so my orthopedist decided to kick it up a notch and prescribe strong pain
OTC medications didn’t do much, so my orthopedist decided to kick it up a notch and prescribe strong pain killers and anti-inflammatories. My nightmare had just started. I took the anti-inflammatory, but it did little to get rid of the pain on my lower back or “the knives as I often described it to others.” Before I finally found this amazing method which would change my life forever, I had gone through the following conventional treatments:
- Painkillers &Anti-inflammatories which my body didn’t react well to. I didn’t like how I felt so I wouldn’t take them. Plus, I knew that feeling like a zombie wasn’t going to help, instead I had to listen to my body.
- Cortisone shots~ . Yes, they give you temporary pain relief, but the pain never went away . It would always come back to haunt me, at the worse time.
- Therapy~ This was also a temporary fix, but I have to admit that some of the exercise they had taught me to do at home, provided some relief then! The cat-camel stretching pose would become part of my healing process at that time and it also helped when I was pregnant.
The list goes on, but none of that took my pain away; ever. That is when I decided to take my health in my own hands and started investigating the root cause of my back pain and how to stop further injury. After much research, here are some of the findings on why I was experiencing that incessant pain:
Our body is so perfectly designed that there are warning signs for anything and everything that threatens its perfect organs, nervous system, and of course the skeletal and muscle system. Turns out that when our body feels that the spinal cord is potentially compromised, what follows is a chain reaction of muscles spasms and tightening to protect the vertebrae– which in turn protects the spinal cord.
Vertebrae are the 33 individual, interlocking bones that form the spinal column. Each vertebra has three main functional components: the vertebral body for load-bearing, the vertebral arch to protect the spinal cord. (source). If none of this happened we would continue to abuse our body and do things we aren’t supposed to while disks, muscles and nerves are continually inflamed. So, my quest now was to figure out how to target the root cause of my back pain–The bulging disks, and tremendous inflammation.
