Reversing GERD, Acid Reflux, Ulcers, and Gastrointestinal Conditions Naturally
According to research, in the United States, around 20% of the population experiences symptoms of Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease (GERD) at least once a week. Worldwide, GERD and related conditions, such as acid reflux, ulcers, and other gastrointestinal issues, significantly affect approximately 10-20% of the global population, impacting their daily lives. While medication is often a go-to solution, embracing the natural approach to healing can effectively reverse and manage these conditions, promoting long-term relief.
Understanding three of the most common conditions:
- GERD (Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease) is characterized by the backflow of stomach acid into the esophagus, causing heartburn and discomfort.
- Acid Reflux occurs when stomach acid flows back into the esophagus, resulting in a burning sensation in the chest or throat.
- Ulcers are open sores that develop on the lining of the stomach or small intestine, often triggered by the bacterium H. pylori or long-term use of NSAIDs (nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs).
Let’s Explore some Natural Strategies to “target the root causes” of most of these GI conditions.
Diet Modifications
- Fermented Foods – Fermented foods often contain probiotics, which can contribute to a healthier gut environment, potentially reducing symptoms associated with these conditions. Here are some of my favorite fermented food recipes
- Avoid your Triggers – identify and avoid foods that trigger your symptoms (always keep a food diary) to keep an eye on those foods.
- Smaller Meals – Opt for smaller, more frequent meals to reduce pressure on the stomach and minimize pressure on the lower esophageal sphincter. However, if you deal with Diabetes of metabolic imbalances, be mindful of the type of foods you are eating.
2. Lifestyle Changes
- Elevate Your Bed – raise the head of your bed by a few inches to prevent stomach acid from moving up into the esophagus. I used these bed raisers which worked like a charm. Two or more pillows gave me a neckache. The Wedge has good reviews, and I have heard decent things about it. You can try this one which seems to work pretty well for most.
- Stress Reduction – practice stress-relief techniques like yoga, meditation, or deep breathing exercises as stress can exacerbate gastrointestinal issues.
3. Herbal Remedies
- Aloe Vera – known for its soothing properties, aloe vera can aid in reducing inflammation in the stomach and esophagus.
- Ginger – ginger has anti-inflammatory properties and may help relieve symptoms of acid reflux and ulcers.
- Marshmallow Root – this herb can form a protective layer in the stomach, easing irritation and promoting healing. 4. Probiotics and Digestive Health
- Probiotics – consuming probiotic-rich foods or supplements can help maintain a healthy balance of gut bacteria, which may aid in reducing symptoms of GERD and ulcers.
- Digestive Enzymes – supplements containing digestive enzymes can assist in proper digestion, potentially reducing acid reflux and other gastrointestinal issues.
5. Lifestyle Habits
- Avoid Smoking and Alcohol – Both can exacerbate acid reflux and ulcers… How? They weaken the lower esophageal sphincter, so quitting smoking and moderating alcohol intake is beneficial.
- Moderate Exercise – engaging in moderate physical activity can help in weight management, aid in digestion, and overall gastrointestinal health.
5. Monitoring and Professional Guidance
- Keep a Food Diary or an App – track what you eat and note any associated symptoms to identify trigger foods.
- Consult a Healthcare Professional – always seek guidance from a holistic or functional medicine professional for proper diagnosis and to discuss natural remedies or any changes in your treatment plan.
